Hands On: Privates

A dose of the claps?

It’s a typically peaceful Monday lunchtime in the pub closest to Zombie Cow’s Kingston HQ. Two grey-haired pensioners nuzzle sandwiches in the corner, while at the bar two businessmen mutter about a particularly important deal that may, or may not, be on the table. It’s all rather serene, but that’s nothing compared to the silence that descends after chief ZC developer Dan Marshall opens his trap. The phrase, “I think I’m most proud of the ascent through the anus,” is something that no-one present will ever manage to un-hear.

It’s simply impossible to discuss Privates without alarming … Continue Reading

News: DS pirate carts now illegal in UK

Judge slams the banhammer.

R4 cartridges, which are used to play pirated copies of games on the Nintendo DS, are now illegal in the UK.

A judge ruled against R4 companies Playables Limited and Wai Dat Chan, making it illegal to import, advertise and sell R4 carts in Britain.

The “first-ever” judgement was made after the London High Court ruled the carts were illegal because they bypass the DS’s security measures in order to run games.

News: Earthworm Jim HD out today on PS3

Eight quid soil you’ll pay.

Gameloft’s touched-up version of vintage platformer Earthworm Jim is out today on PS3 for £7.99/€9.99.

That’s a lot of money, but Earthworm Jim HD works hard for it. The single-player campaign has had an HD facelift, for starters, and three exclusive levels added that take place in a never-before-seen setting.

Local and online co-op for up to four people has been worked in, too, and spans 15 multiplayer levels.

Hands On: End of Nations

Country retreat.

In theory, massively multiplayer gaming isn’t a genre. It’s everything else – a business model (or several), a technological framework, a social philosophy. There’s little to dictate that MMOs have to fit a particular style of design or gameplay.

In practice, of course, things have been very different. There are a number of reasons why the massively multiplayer online role-playing game has come to totally dominate the field. Online gaming’s roots in the early multi-user dungeons, or MUDs, is one of the most important, along with the RPG form’s relatively lax requirements when it comes to lag. But these reasons … Continue Reading

News: THQ making new kind of WWE game

Will be “less simmy”, more WWE All Stars.

In 2011, THQ will introduce the West to a different kind of WWE game.

This, core games boss Danny Bilson told CVG, will be “less simmy” than WWE SmackDown vs. RAW and more like the newly revealed WWE All Stars.

“What we do have a plan for on [WWE SmackDown vs. RAW] is what you saw with All Stars. And next year you’ll see another new extension there in another way that’s just as exciting as All Stars, but a little different,” Bilson said. “We’re not talking about that yet.”
